                1. Write the given lengths of the long jumps into words:
                    (a) 3.15 m = ___________________________________________

                    (b) 3.52 m = ___________________________________________

                    (c) 3.66 m = ___________________________________________
                2. What is the place value of digits 5 and 2 in the number 3.52?

              Decimals (Decimal Numbers)

We have learnt in the previous class that fractions having denominators 10, 100, 1000, …
              are called decimal fractions.

                                      ,
              For example, 1 , 19 225 , and 312 , which have denominators 10, 100 and 1000. These
                              10 10 100 1000
              are decimal fractions.
We can express these decimal fractions in decimal form as 0.1, 1.9, 2.25 and 0.312,
              respectively.

So, a decimal is another way of expressing a fractional number without numerator and
              denominator.
A decimal number has three parts: whole number part,
decimal point and decimal part. 51 • 43

Decimal point separates the decimal number into two
parts: whole part (on the left side of the decimal Whole number Decimal Decimal part
                                                                                     part
point) and the decimal part (on the right side of the point
              decimal point).

              Tenths

Let us consider a sheet of paper having size of unit length which is divided into 10 equal

parts. Each part represents 1 of sheet which is read as one-tenth.
                                               10
                                   1
In decimal form, is written as 0.1 and read as zero point one.
                                  10
Some more examples of tenths are:

                  (a) 3 (three-tenths) = 0.3 (zero point three)
                        10

                  (b) 7 (seven-tenths) = 0.7 (zero point seven)
                        10

                  (c) 9 (nine-tenths) = 0.9 (zero point nine) 1
                        10 One-tenth = 10 = 0.1
