example 2: Convert the decimals 0.246, 46.8, 5.96, 3.042 into like decimals.
Solution: Clearly, 3.042 has 3 decimal places which is largest. So, every decimal number
must have 3 decimal places. So, add zeros at the right side of the decimal part
of each decimal.
Note
Unlike decimals : 0.246 46.8 5.96 3.042 Putting or removing
↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ zeros at the end of a
decimal number does
Like decimals : 0.246 46.800 5.960 3.042 not change its value.
Equivalent Decimals
Decimal numbers having the same value are called equivalent decimals.
Let us take a square paper sheet and divide it into 10 equal strips. Shade 3 strips which
represent 3 tenths, i.e., 0.3.
Now, again divide the 10 strips by 10 vertical
divisions. Now, it shows 100 equal divisions and the
shaded part represents 30 hundredths, i.e., 0.30. =
As we see that decimal numbers 0.3 and 0.30 have
same value because both represent the same shaded
portion. So, 0.3 and 0.30 are equivalent decimals. 3 tenths = 0.3 = 30 hundredths = 0.30
