              example 2: Convert the decimals 0.246, 46.8, 5.96, 3.042 into like decimals.

              Solution:     Clearly, 3.042 has 3 decimal places which is largest. So, every decimal number
                            must have 3 decimal places. So, add zeros at the right side of the decimal part
                            of each decimal.
                                                                                                       Note
                            Unlike decimals  :        0.246     46.8      5.96       3.042     Putting or removing
                                                            ↓              ↓              ↓           ↓  zeros at the end of a
                                                                                               decimal number does
                            Like decimals        :    0.246     46.800    5.960      3.042     not change its value.
              Equivalent Decimals


              Decimal numbers having the same value are called equivalent decimals.
              Let  us take a  square paper  sheet  and  divide it  into 10  equal  strips.  Shade  3  strips  which
              represent 3 tenths, i.e., 0.3.

              Now,  again  divide  the 10  strips  by  10  vertical
              divisions. Now, it shows 100 equal divisions and the

              shaded part represents 30 hundredths, i.e., 0.30.                                 =
              As we see that decimal numbers 0.3 and 0.30 have
              same value because both represent the same shaded

              portion. So, 0.3 and 0.30 are equivalent decimals.                 3 tenths = 0.3         =         30 hundredths = 0.30
