Addition or subtraction of decimal numbers is similar to addition or subtraction of whole

numbers. Just follow these simple steps:

Step 1: First convert all the given decimals into like decimals.
Step 2: Write the decimal numbers one below the other so that the decimal points are in

                       the same column.

Step 3: Now, add or subtract the decimal numbers as we do for the whole numbers.

Step 4: Place the decimal point in the answer exactly below the decimal points in the
                       given numbers.

              example 1: Add 21.005, 24.699 and 18.386.
                                                                                                        1 1 1 2
              Solution: Here, 21.005, 24.699 and 18.386 are like decimals. 2 1 • 0 0 5
                                                                                                       2 4 • 6 9 9
We write the addends one below other so that the decimal + 1 8 • 3 8 6
points are in the same column and then add them. 6 4 • 0 9 0

                            Thus, 21.005 + 24.699 + 18.386 = 64.090.
              example 2: Subtract 35.004 from 160.8.

              Solution: Converting unlike decimals into like decimals, 5 10 7 9 10
                                                                                     1 6 0 • 8 0 0 Greater number
                            we get 35.004 and 160.800. – 3 5 • 0 0 4 Smaller number

                            Now, we subtract 160.800 from 35.004. 1 2 5 • 7 9 6

                            Thus, 160.8 – 35.004 = 125.796.
example 3: Find the difference of 48.264 and 193.8 and check your answer.

              Solution: 193.8 = 193.800
                            Thus, Checking: Remember

                                  8 13 7 9 10 1 1 1 To find the difference,
                               1 9 3 • 8 0 0 1 4 5 • 5 3 6 always subtract the
                             – 4 8 • 2 6 4 + 4 8 • 2 6 4 smaller number from
                               1 4 5 • 5 3 6 1 9 3 • 8 0 0 the greater number.

                            Thus, 193.8 – 48.264 = 145.536
example 4: Suresh travels 11.5 km by bus, 7.75 km by metro and 2.250 km by auto to
reach the office. Find the total distance covered by Suresh to reach the office.

Solution: To find the total distance travelled by Suresh to reach the office, we have to
add 11.5 km, 7.75 km and 2.250 km.
