              multiPlicatioN of Decimal Numbers

multiplication of a Decimal Number by a Whole Number

To multiply a decimal number by a whole number, follow the following steps:
Step 1: Find the product of both the numbers ignoring the decimal point.

Step 2: Place the decimal point in the product thus obtained after as many places as in the
given decimal from right side to left side.

              example 1: Multiply the following:
                    (a) 32.6 × 4 (b) 63.53 × 5 (c) 1.534 × 176

              Solution:

                    (a) 3 2 6 3 2 • 6 (b) 6 3 5 3 6 3 • 5 3
                         × 4 × 4 × 5 × 5
                         1 3 0 4 1 3 0 • 4 3 1 7 6 5 3 1 7 • 6 5
                                         One decimal Two decimal
                                            place places
                         Thus, 32.6 × 4 = 130.4 Thus, 63.53 × 5 = 317.65
