                                   Learning by Doing

Objective: Enhancing the concept of addition of decimal numbers using paper strips.

Materials required: Some rectangular paper strips, colour sketch pens, pencil

              Procedure:

                  Š Let us add 0.5 and 0.7.

Š Take four identical rectangular strips of paper and fold each of it into 10 equal parts. To

represent 0.5 in one of the strips, shade 5 parts out of the 10 and to represent 0.7 in
another strip, shade 7 parts out of the 10 using the same colour pattern.

                                         5 7
                                        10 10

Now, cut the shaded portion of both the strips and paste two of them on the blank
                  strips.

                                               1 2
                                                                    10

The combined strip now represents 1.2, which is shown in addition form as

                   5 + 7 = 12 = 1.2
                  10 10 10

                  Š To subtract 0.5 from 0.7.

Take two strips and shade both the strips with different colours as done above in the

                  addition activity.

                                          5 7
                                         10 10
Now, cut out the smaller shaded portions (5 parts) and paste over the other strip as

shown below. You will be left with 2 shaded portions of green.

                                                  2
                                                  10

                  Thus, 7 – 5 = 2 = 0.2
                         10 10 10
