The relationship between different units of time given below helps you for their conversion.
1 minute = 60 seconds 1 fortnight = 2 weeks = 14 days
1 hour = 60 minutes 1 year = 12 months
1 day = 24 hours 1 year = 365 days
1 week = 7 days 1 leap year = 366 days
Conversion of Higher Units into Lower Units
To convert higher units of time into lower units, we multiply.
example 1: Convert the following:
(a) 15 minutes into seconds (b) 8 minutes 52 seconds into seconds
(c) 2 hours 23 minutes 19 seconds into seconds
Solution:
(a) Since, 1 minute = 60 seconds
So, 15 minutes = (15 × 60) seconds = 900 seconds
(b) 8 minutes 52 seconds = 8 minutes + 52 seconds
= (8 × 60) seconds + 52 seconds
= 480 seconds + 52 seconds = 532 seconds
(c) 2 hours 23 minutes 19 seconds
= 2 hours + 23 minutes + 19 seconds
= (2 × 60) minutes + 23 minutes + 19 seconds
= (120 minutes + 23 minutes) + 19 seconds
= 143 minutes + 19 seconds = (143 × 60) seconds + 19 seconds
= 8580 seconds + 19 seconds = 8599 seconds
