In the previous class, we learnt how to round off numbers to the nearest 10 and 100.

Let us recall and extend them. While rounding off, we use the nearest multiple of 10, 100

              or 1000.
rounding off to the nearest 10

To round off a number to the nearest 10, follow these steps.

Step 1: Look at the digit at ones place of the given number.

Step 2: If the digit is less than 5, replace the digit by 0 and keep the other digits as it is.

Step 3: If the digit is 5 or more, add 1 to the digit at tens place and replace digit at ones
place by 0, keeping other digits as it is.

              examples: (a) 49132 rounded off to the nearest 10 = 49130 (as ones digit 2 < 5)

                            (b) 54357 rounded off to the nearest 10 = 54360 (as ones digit 7 > 5)
                            (c) 703475 rounded off to the nearest 10 = 703480 (as ones digit 5 = 5)

rounding off to the nearest 100

To round off a number to the nearest 100, follow these steps.

Step 1: Look at the digit at tens place of the given number.

Step 2: If the digit is less than 5, replace tens and ones digits by 0 and keep the other
                       digits as it is.

Step 3: If digit at tens place is 5 or more, add 1 to the digit at hundreds place and replace

the digits at tens and ones place by 0, keeping other digits as it is.
              examples: (a) 41729 rounded off to the nearest 100 = 41700 (as tens digit 2 < 5)

                            (b) 35587 rounded off to the nearest 100 = 35600 (as tens digit 8 > 5)
