Different Shapes and Sizes Can Also have the Same Volume

Rohan has 4 cubes each of side 1 cm. The volume of each cube is 1 cubic cm.

Rohan makes the following shapes using 4 cubes.

Since each of them is made up of 4 unit cubes, the volume of each shape is 4 cubic cm.

example: Find the volume of the given solids which are made up of cubes of side 1 cm.
                  (a) (b) (c)

Solution: (a) The given solid shape is made up of 8 unit cubes of 1 cm.

So, the volume of the solid shape is 8 cu cm.
                          (b) The given solid shape is made up of 15 unit cubes of 1 cm.

So, the volume of solid shape is 15 cu cm.
                          (c) The given solid shape is made up of 8 unit cubes of 1 cm.

So, the volume of solid shape is 8 cu cm.

                       Think and Answer
Measure the dimensions of your and your friend’s lunch box. Which box is bigger in size?

              VolUme of A CUBoiD

Look at the cuboid shown here. It is 4 cm long, 2 cm wide and 3 cm high.

The cuboid is divided into 24 unit cubes of side 1 cm each.
So, the volume of the cuboid = 24 cu. cm

If we find the product of its dimensions of length, breadth and 3 cm
              height, we get

                       4 cm × 2 cm × 3 cm = 24 cu. cm 2 cm
                                                                                                      4 cm
The product is same as the volume of the cuboid.

              Thus, volume of a cuboid (V) = Length (I) × Breadth (b) × Height (h) cubic units

example 1: The length, breadth and height of a cuboidal box is 15 m, 10 m and 5 m. Find

              its volume.
              Solution: Volume of cuboid = l × b × h 5 m

                                                  = 15 m × 10 m × 5 m
                                                  = 750 cu. m 15 m 10 m
