rounding off to the nearest 1000

To round off a number to the nearest 1000, follow these steps.
Step 1: Look at the digit at the hundreds place of the given number.

Step 2: If the digit is less than 5, replace the digits at hundreds, tens and ones place by 0
and keep the other digits as it is.

Step 3: If the digit is 5 or more, add 1 to the digit at thousands place, replace each digit
on its right by 0 and keep other digits as it is.
              examples:

                    (a) 28375 rounded off to the nearest thousand = 28000 (as hundreds digit 3 < 5)

                    (b) 20684 rounded off to the nearest thousand = 21000 (as hundreds digit 6 > 5)

                    (c) 32540 rounded off to the nearest thousand = 33000 (as hundreds digit 5 = 5)

example 1: Round off each of the following numbers to the nearest 10.
                            (a) 584658 (b) 3268574
Solution: (a) In 584658, the digit at ones place is 8, which is greater than 5.

So, we increase the digit at tens place by 1 and replace the digit at ones
                                 place by 0.

Thus, 584658 becomes 584660 after rounding off to the nearest 10.
                            (b) In 3268574, the digit at ones place is 4, which is less than 5.
So, we replace the digit at ones place by 0.

Thus, 3268574 becomes 3268570 after rounding off to the nearest 10.
example 2: Round off each of the following numbers to the nearest 100.

                            (a) 2849358 (b) 42674937
Solution: (a) In 2849358, the digit at tens place is 5.

So, we increase the digit at hundreds place by 1 and replace tens and ones
                                 digits by 0.
Thus, 2849358 becomes 2849400 after rounding off to the nearest 100.

                            (b) In 42674937, the digit at tens place is 3, which is less than 5.
So, we replace the digits at tens and ones place by 0.

Thus, 42674937 becomes 42674900 after rounding off to the nearest 100.
example 3: Round off 34856735 to the nearest:

                            (a) 100 (b) 1000
Solution: (a) In 34856735, the digit at tens place is 3, which is less than 5.
                                 Thus, 34856735 becomes 34856700

                            (b) In 34856735, the digit at hundreds place is 7, which is greater than 5.
                                 Thus, 34856735 becomes 34857000.
