Use a scale to measure the distance between the India Gate and the Red Fort shown
below.
Scale: 1 cm = 750 m
In the above, the distance between the India Gate and the Red Fort is 8 cm.
The scale is 1 cm = 750 m. So, the actual distance between the India Gate and the Red
Fort is 8 × 750 m = 6000 m = 6 km.
Keys: The keys tell us the meaning of the different symbols used in the map.
Look at the following map. It shows different places using different symbols.

directions
A symbol like a compass is used to show the directions in a map. Look it N
alongside.
We can see that the upper part shows ‘N’ which means ‘North direction’, W E
the below part shows ‘S’ meaning the ‘South direction’, the left part indicates
‘W’ that means ‘West direction’ and the right part shows ‘E’ which means S
‘East direction’. North (N)
North, South, East and West are primary directions. North-West North-East
Now study the diagram shown alongside: (NW) (NE)
The direction between north and east is called the West (W) East (E)
north-east (NE) direction.
The direction between the north and west is called the South-West South-East
(SW)
north-west (NW) direction. South (S) (SE)
The direction between the west and south is called the
south-west (SW) direction.
The direction between the south and east is called the south-east (SE) direction.
