Organising the Data in tabular fOrm Or tally Chart
When the raw data is arranged in a tabular form, the process is called organising data.
tally marks
Tally marks are vertical lines (|); it is also called bars. Tally marks are always represented in
bunches of five. First four tally marks are drawn like |, ||, |||, |||| and fifth tally mark is
drawn diagonally across the first four tally marks to make a group of five ( ).
For example, if an observation is repeated once, we put one bar (|); if an observation is
repeated twice, we put two bars (||); if an observation is repeated thrice, we put three
bars (|||); if an observation is repeated four times, we put four bars (||||); but if the
observation is repeated five times, we put four bars vertical and fifth bar diagonally ( ).
tally Chart
A tally chart is a quick and easy way to count how many data or items are there in each
category. We represent each item as a tally mark.
example: Let us consider the marks obtained (out of 20) in maths test by 30 students of
class V.
18 18 9 13 10 18 11 11 10 18
19 16 12 15 13 20 10 9 14 17
14 15 19 11 17 15 10 18 16 11
Let us prepare a tally chart for the above data.
