              Let us answer the following questions by using the tally chart.
                    (a) What is the maximum obtained marks? 20
                    (b) What is the minimum obtained marks? 9

                    (c) How many students get marks less than 15? 15
                    (d) How many students get marks more than 17? 8
                    (e) How many students get 19 marks? 2

                       Think and Answer
                    A maths teacher of class V collects information about the colour each student likes.
                    Red, Pink, Blue, Red, Green, Black, Purple, Blue, Red, Black, Purple, Pink, Blue, Yellow, Red, Blue,
                    Purple, White, Pink, Yellow, Brown, Pink, Brown, Green, Red, Black, Blue, Purple, Black, Blue
                    Observe the above information and answer the following questions.
                    1. How many students like red colour? 2. How many students like yellow colour?
                    3. Which is the least favourite colour? 4. Which is the most favourite colour?

              Organising Data using tally marks

              example 1: The sizes of shoes worn by 32 students of class V are given below:

                        5           6           4           6           7           5           6          5
                        6           5           4           6           5           6           5          6
                        7           7           6           6           7           7           6          6
                        4           7           7           5           5           6           5          6
              Organise the data in tabular form using tally marks.

              Solution: Step 1: Look at the given data. In how many categories the data can be
                                       grouped. Here the shoe sizes are 4, 5, 6 and 7.
                            Step 2: Make a table with suitable number Sizes of tally Numbers of
                                       of columns and rows (here, 3 shoes marks students
                                       columns  and  6  rows)  and  label            4          |||            3
                                       them as shown alongside.                      5           ||||          9

                            Step 3: Now, cross out one number at 6 ||| 13
                                       a time and  add  a bar  to  the               7            ||           7
                                       corresponding row of tally marks. total = 32
                            Step 4: Now, write the number of students
                                       by counting bar from their respective row.

                            Step 5: We easily find the number of students worn a particular shoe size by
                                       adding the tally marks till crossing out all the items (data).
                            Step 6: Find the total number of students by adding the number of students
                                       in each row.

              teacher’s Encourage the children to arrange the given data in ascending order before grouping the data into categories.
