Number of activity kits sold in the month of June = 22.
Number of activity kits sold in the month of July = 14.

Number of activity kits sold in the month of August = 18.
Therefore, total number of activity kits sold in these five months

                                                                                   = 16 + 10 + 22 + 14 + 18 = 80

              Drawing a bar graPh

Let us draw a bar graph using the following data which shows the number of students
using various mode of transportation to reach the school.
Modes of transportation Walking Bicycle School Bus Car

               Number of students 20 15 40 10
To draw a bar graph for the given data, we follow the steps given below.

              Step 1: Draw a horizontal line (X-axis) and a Y
vertical line (Y-axis) which is perpendicular 50 Modes of transportation used by
to each other on a graph paper. 45 the students
                                                                            40
Step 2: Take a suitable scale on vertical line 30
                       (Y-axis) such as 1 unit = 5 students. 25

Step 3: Now, using the scale, mark the number of Number of students 20
                       students on Y-axis such as: 5, 10, 15, 20, 15
                                                                            10
                       25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50. 5

Step 4: On a horizontal line (X-axis), mark the different 0 Walking Bicycle School Bus Car X
mode of transportation at equal distances. Modes of Transportation

Step 5: Draw the bars of equal width and height that should represent the number of
                       students.

Step 6: Give an appropriate title to the bar graph.

                                                                 Note
                 While drawing a bar graph.
Š Title of the graph should be written on the top of the graph.
Š The items represented along the horizontal and vertical lines should be written along the lines.
Š A convenient and clear scale should be used.
Š Bars should be drawn of equal width and at equal gaps.
Š Bars should be shaded or coloured.

teacher’s Explain to the students how to choose a scale for data (numerical values) and why and how the least and the
tip greatest numerical values are important. Also, tell the students repeatedly that a vertical bar graph uses a

horizontal axis for the labels. We can also draw a horizontal bar graph using the vertical axis for the labels
and numerical values on the horizontal axis.
