example 2: An NGO planted 4,12,250; 3,34,278; and 2,43,581 saplings across the whole
country on three successive years. How many saplings were planted in total during these
three years?
Solution: L tth th H t O
1 1 2
st
Number of saplings planted in 1 year = 4 1 2 2 5 0
nd
Number of saplings planted in 2 year = 3 3 4 2 7 8
Number of saplings planted in 3 year = + 2 4 3 5 8 1
rd
Total saplings planted in all three years = 9 9 0 1 0 9
Thus, 990109 saplings were planted in three years.
example 3: The numbers of people who visited the book-fair in the year 2021, 2022 and
2023 were 537815, 956237 and 630792, respectively. How many people visited book-fair
in these three years?
Solution: tL L tth th H t O
2 1 1 1 1 1
Number of people who visited book-fair in 2021 = 5 3 7 8 1 5
Number of people who visited book-fair in 2022 = 9 5 6 2 3 7
Number of people who visited book-fair in 2023 = + 6 3 0 7 9 2
Total number of people visited in these three years = 2 1 2 4 8 4 4
Thus, 2124844 people visited book-fair in these three years.
Properties of Addition
1. Numbers can be added in any order. Their sum will remain FACTS
the same. It is called order property of addition. The grouping property
can also be used to
example: 4025 + 1135 = 5160 and 1135 + 4025 = 5160 check the correctness
of the sum of addition.
2. When 1 is added to a number, we get its successor.
example: 2478 + 1 = 2479.
Here, 2479 is the successor of 2478.
3. When 0 is added to a number, the sum is the number itself.
It is called zero property of addition.
example: 5136 + 0 = 5136 and 2793 + 0 = 2793
4. If the grouping of addends is changed, the sum remains the same. It is called grouping
property of addition.
example: (35000 + 60000) + 9500 = 1,04,500
35000 + (60000 + 9500) = 1,04,500
(35000 + 9500) + 60000 = 1,04,500
