example 4: The greater number of two numbers is 96,58,358 and their sum is 1,00,00,568.
Find the smaller number.
Solution: To find the smaller number, subtract C tL L tth th H t O
greater number from the sum. 9 9 9
0 10 10 10 10
The sum of two numbers = 1 0 0 0 0 5 6 8
Greater number = – 9 6 5 8 3 5 8
Therefore, the smaller number = 3 4 2 2 1 0
So, the smaller number is 3,42,210.
Properties of subtraction
1. When 0 is subtracted from a number, the difference is the number itself.
example: 5048 – 0 = 5048 and 2671 – 0 = 2671
2. When 1 is subtracted from a number, we get its predecessor.
example: 3489 – 1 = 3488. Here, 3488 is the predecessor of 3489.
3. When a number is subtracted from itself, the difference is always 0.
example: 3483 – 3483 = 0 and 27381 – 27381 = 0
Think and Answer
Find the number which is 3676 less than the sum of 88888 and 33333.
Addition And subtrAction together
example 1: Simplify: 31119281 – 67215321 + 57252918.
Solution: Step 1: First add all the numbers having C tL L tth th H t O
either ‘+’ sign or no sign in
front of them. 1 1
3 1 1 1 9 2 8 1
+ 5 7 2 5 2 9 1 8
8 8 3 7 2 1 9 9
Step 2: Subtract the number having ‘–’ C tL L tth th H t O
sign in front of it from the sum 6 11 11
obtained in step 1.
8 8 3 7 2 1 9 9
– 6 7 2 1 5 3 2 1
2 1 1 5 6 8 7 8
Thus, 31119281 – 67215321 + 57252918 = 21156878
Think and Answer
Subtract the sum of the place values of 5s from the sum of place values of 8s in
the number 85235586.
