example 2: In the first year, a farm produced 3993123 oranges. In the second year, it
produced 7891323 oranges. If 376072 were rotten oranges and the farm sold the remaining
quantity of oranges. How many oranges were sold in both years?

              Solution: Number of oranges in 1st year = 3993123 C tL L tth th H t O
                            Number of oranges in 2nd year = 7891323 1 1 1
                              Therefore, the total number of oranges in 3 9 9 3 1 2 3

                            both years + 7 8 9 1 3 2 3
                            = 3993123 + 7891323 = 11884446 1 1 8 8 4 4 4 6

                            Number of rotten oranges = 376072 C tL L tth th H t O

                                                                                                    7 14 3 14
                            Therefore, the total oranges sold in both years 1 1 8 8 4 4 4 6

                            = 11884446 – 376072 = 11508374 – 3 7 6 0 7 2

                            Thus, 11508374 oranges were sold in both years. 1 1 5 0 8 3 7 4
example 3: In an examination, 19543 students passed. Out of these, 3580 got grade A,
9500 got grade B and the remaining got grade C. How many students got grade C?
              Solution: tth th H t O

                                                                                                   1 1
                            Number of students who got grade A = 3 5 8 0
                            Number of students who got grade B = + 9 5 0 0
                            Number of students who got grade A and grade B = 1 3 0 8 0

                                                                                                  tth th H t O

                                                                                                            4 14
                            Total number of students who passed the exam = 1 9 5 4 3

                            Number of students who got grade A and grade B = – 1 3 0 8 0
                            Number of students who got grade C = 0 6 4 6 3

Thus, 6463 students got grade C in the examination.
example 4: The population of a town is 2876543. Out of these, 1542678 are adult males
and 1250799 are adult females. How many children are there in the town?
              Solution: tL L tth th H t O

                                                                                                        1 1 1
                            Number of adult males = 1 5 4 2 6 7 8
                            Number of adult females in the town = + 1 2 5 0 7 9 9
                            Total population of adult males and females = 2 7 9 3 4 7 7

Now, find the number of children in the town.
                                                                                          tL L tth th H t O

                                                                                               7 17 4 13 13
                            Total population of the town = 2 8 7 6 5 4 3

                            Total population of adult males and females = – 2 7 9 3 4 7 7
                            Therefore, number of children in the town = 8 3 0 6 6
