Checking:
Quotient × Divisor + Remainder = Dividend
1168 × 260 + 3 = 303683
303680 + 3 = 303683
303683 = 303683
Hence, the division is correct.
example 4: Delhi Jal Board supplied 978795 litres of water in a colony which had 375
families. How much water did each family get if each family got same amount of water and
how much water was left?
Solution: Total quantity of water supplied = 978795 litres 2 6 1 0 Q
9 7 8 7 9 5
Total number of families = 375 375 7 5 0
Quantity of water each family got = (978795 ÷ 375) litres 2 2 8 7
Thus, each family of the colony got 2610 litres of water 2 2 5 0
and 45 litres of water was left. 3 7 9

example 5: The cost of 125 radio sets is `104500. What is the cost of one radio?
Solution: Cost of 125 radio sets = `104500 8 3 6 Q
1 0 4 5 0 0
Cost of 1 radio set = `104500 ÷ 125 = `836 125 1 0 0 0
Thus, the cost of one radio set is `836. 4 5 0

Properties of division
1. When a number is divided by itself, the quotient is 1.
example: (a) 36 ÷ 36 = 1 (b) 239 ÷ 239 = 1
2. When a number is divided by 1, the quotient is the number itself.
example: (a) 37 ÷ 1 = 37 (b) 325 ÷ 1 = 325
3. When 0 is divided by a non-zero number, the quotient is zero.
example: (a) 0 ÷ 44 = 0 (b) 0 ÷ 365 = 0
4. Division by 0 is meaningless.
