How many marbles would each get? To do this, first, find the total marbles with them and
then, divide the total by the number of friends.
Total marbles = 4 + 9 + 8 = 21 marbles.
Divide the total number of marbles by the number of friends.
21 ÷ 3 = 7 marbles.
Sum of quantities
Thus, each friend will get 7 marbles. Average = Total number of quantities
Here, 7 is the average of 4, 9 and 8.
Hence, the average of two or more numbers or quantities is the sum of all the numbers
or quantities divided by the total number of quantities or numbers.
example 1: The marks obtained (out of 40) by Riddhima in five different subjects are as
follows: Hindi: 34 Science: 32 Maths: 38 English: 28 GK: 33.
Find her average marks obtained in a subject.
Solution: The sum of marks obtained in five subjects.
34 + 32 + 38 + 28 + 33 = 165
Report Card
Sum of the marks 165 A+
We have, Average marks = = = 33.
Number of subjects 5
Thus, the average marks obtained in a subject is 33.
example 2: A cat slept 8 hours on Monday, 10 hours on Tuesday and 9 hours on Wednesday.
What was the average number of hours the cat slept per day?
Solution: The total number of hours the cat slept in three days.
8 hours + 10 hours + 9 hours = 27 hours
Total number of hours
We have, Average sleeping hours =
Number of days
27
= = 9 hours
3
Thus, the average number of hours the cat slept per day is 9 hours.
example 3: Sneha collected 39 flowers, Shrijaa collected 46 flowers and Sunaina collected
35 flowers. What was the average number of flowers each child collected?
Solution: Total number of flowers collected = 39 + 46 + 35 = 120.
Number of girls = 3.
We have, Average number of flowers collected
Total number of flowers collected 120
= = = 40.
Number of girls 3
Thus, the average number of flowers collected is 40.
