              comparing like Fractions

We know that like fractions are fractions with same denominator.

If the fractions are like fractions, then the fraction having greater numerator is greater.

              example 1: Compare the following:
                            4
                                    3
                                                     5
                                                             7
                         (a) and (b) and (c) 7 and 5
                            5 5 8 8 10 10
Solution: Look at the given pairs of fractions and compare them by observing diagrams.
                                                     5
                                    3
                            4
                                                             7
                         (a) and (b) and (c) 7 and 5
                            5 5 8 8 10 10

                                 4 > 3 5 < 7 7 > 5
                                 5 5 8 8 10 10

                       Think and Answer
Ria and Sia went to a juice corner. They bought same amount of juice.
                               2 5
Ria drank part and Sia drank part of juice. Who drank more?
                               9 9

              comparing unlike Fractions

              For Fractions with same numerator

For fractions with same numerator, the fraction with the smaller denominator is greater.

                                 1 1
              Let us compare and .
                                 2 3
                                                   1
Look at the adjoining figure; for , the strip has been divided into 2 equal
parts and shaded one part. 2

                   1
For , the same strip has been divided into three equal parts and shaded one part.
                   3
Clearly, 1 shaded part out of 2 equal parts is larger than 1 shaded part out of 3 equal
              parts.
                       1
                            1
              Hence, > .
                       2 3
For Fractions Having different numerators and denominators

Change the fractions into their respective equivalent fractions with the same denominator
by finding the LCM of the denominators of the given fractions. Compare them as like
              fractions.
