Let us observe the pictograph which Activity Number of students
gives information regarding the number Sky diving
of students in class VI-A who voted for

their favourite activity before going on Rafting
            an adventure trip.
                                                          Trekking
We observe that 4 students voted for sky
diving, 7 students for rafting, 6 students Rock climbing
for trekking, 3 students for rock climbing Hot air ballooning
and 5 students for hot air ballooning, so

it was easy to take a for each student. Key: 1 = 1 student
But is it possible to take a picture or symbol for each object or thing everywhere?

Suppose, we want to show all the students from all the classes of the school going on the trip, the
data will be large and then we need to choose a scale.
            Reading and Interpreting a Pictograph

The given pictograph shows the number of students enrolled in four different houses of a school.

                                     House Number of students enrolled

                                 Takshashila

                                 Nalanda

                                 Vallabhi

                                 Vikramashila

                                 Key: 1 = 50 students

Let us try to interpret the pictograph and answer the questions given below.

             (a) What is the number of students enrolled in the Nalanda house?
In the row for Nalanda house, there are 9 and value of 1 = 50 students.
So, we can say that the number of students enrolled in this house is 9 × 50 = 450 students.

             (b) In which house is the least number of students enrolled?

Since, the row for Vallabhi house has only five symbols ( ) which is least, so we can say
that the least number of students is enrolled in the Vallabhi house.
              (c) How many more students are enrolled in the Vikramashila house compared to the Takshashila
                 house?

Number of students enrolled in the Vikramashila house = 7 × 50 = 350 students
Number of students enrolled in the Takshashila house = 6 × 50 = 300 students
                  Difference in number of students = 350 – 300 = 50 students

So, there are 50 more students enrolled in the Vikramashila house compared to the
                 Takshashila house.
