Example 3: The pictograph given below shows books on different subjects kept in a school library.

                 Subjects Number of books

                 Hindi

                 English

                 Science Key: 1 = 150 books

                 Maths

                 History

Observe it and answer the following questions:
                           (a) How many Science books are there in the library?

                           (b) How many Hindi books are there in the library?

                           (c) Which subject books are maximum in number?
                           (d) How many books are there in all in the library?

                Solution: (a) Here 4 symbols ( ) represent the Science books and 1 = 150 books.

So, there are 4 × 150 = 600 science books in the library.
                           (b) Since, there are 3 complete symbols ( ) and 1 half symbol ( ) that represent the
                               Hindi books.

And, 1 represents 150 books and 1 represents 75 books.

So, the total number of Hindi books in the library is 3 × 150 + 75 = 525 books
                           (c) English books are maximum in number in the library as these are represented by

                               7 symbols ( ) which is maximum.

                           (d) In the pictograph, there are 20 complete symbols ( ) and 2 half symbols ( ) that
represent the total number of books in the library.
                                 Therefore, the total number of books in the library is 20 × 150 + 2 × 75 = 3000 + 150
                               = 3150 books.
                Drawing a Pictograph

So far we have learnt what a pictograph is and how a pictograph can be interpreted. Now, our focus
is to learn how to make a pictograph. A pictograph can be made easily if you know the following
                steps:
                   • Collection of data: First collect the data of different categories you want to represent pictorially.

                   • Choosing pictures or symbols: After understanding the data, you need to select a picture or a
symbol that has to be used to represent the data.

                   • Deciding the suitable scale: Scaling is the most important component of a pictograph. It tells
us the value of the picture or symbol representing the quantity.

                                                                  111 Data Handling and Presentation
