Can you identify this graph?
It is a Bar Graph.
A bar graph is another way of representing data graphically.
It uses rectangular bars of equal width and varying heights instead of pictures or symbols to
represent the data. Bar graphs can help us quickly understand and interpret information, such
as the highest value, the comparison of values of different categories, etc.
When the amount of data is large, presenting is through a pictograph is not only time consuming
but at times difficult too. We must learn more about the bar graphs in detail.
Properties of a Bar Graph
• In a bar graph, bars of equal width are drawn with different heights, with equal spacing between
them, using a suitable scale depending on the data.
• If the bars are drawn on the horizontal
line (x-axis as baseline), then the scale of Knowledge Desk
heights of bars is shown along the vertical William Playfair is credited with inventing the bar
line (y-axis). If the bars are drawn alone the chart in 1781. Though Nicole Oresme, used a bar
chart in the 14th century. As far as use of first
vertical line (y-axis as the baseline), then timeline chart using individual bars is concerned,
the scale of the lengths of bars is shown Joseph Priestley first used the bar graph in 1765.
along the horizontal line (x-axis).
• Each bar represents only one value of the numerical data. So, there are as many bars as there
are values in the numerical data.
• The height (or length) of each bar indicates the corresponding value of the numerical data.
The vertical bars in the bar graph given below shows the number of gold medals won by India in
the Asian Games between 2002 to 2022.
