                  (e) What is the difference between the longest and the shortest life spans of the animals in the
                     given graph?

The elephant has the longest life span, i.e., 80 years, and the monkey has the shortest life
                     span, i.e., 24 years.
                      So, the required difference = 80 – 24 = 56 years.
Example 5: The following bar graph shows the monthly expenditure of Shahid’s family on various
                items:

Use the bar graph to answer the following questions:
                           (a) On which items does Shahid’s family spend the most and the second most?

                           (b) Is the cost of electricity one-half the cost of education?
                           (c) Is the cost of education less than one-fourth the cost of food?
Solution: (a) By observing the given bar graph, we find that the tallest bar is for food and the
second tallest bar is for house rent. Therefore, Shahid’s family spends the most on
food and the second most on house rent.

                           (b) According to the graph, the cost of electricity = `400, and the cost of education =
                               `800 = `400 × 2.
                                                     1
                                That means, `400 = × `800
                                                     2
So, the cost of electricity is one-half the cost of education.
