(c) The cost of education = `800
The cost of food = `3400
1
\ One-fourth of `3400 = × `3400 = `850
4
Clearly, `800 < `850
Hence, the cost of education is less than the one-fourth the cost of food.
Example 6: The graph given here shows the
details of tree saplings planted by students
and teachers of a primary school on the
school campus and in the surrounding village
during the first week of July.
Complete the following statements using the
graph:
(a) The total number of saplings
planted on Wednesday and
Thursday is ............... .
(b) The total number of saplings
planted during the whole week is ............... .
(c) The greatest number of saplings were planted on ..............., and the least number of
saplings were planted on ............... .
Solution: From the graph, we conclude that:
(a) The total number of saplings planted on Wednesday and Thursday is 40 + 50 = 90.
(b) The total number of saplings planted during the whole week is 62 + 50 + 40 + 50 + 60
+ 70 + 50 = 382.
(c) The greatest number of saplings were planted on Saturday, and the least number of
saplings were planted on Wednesday.
Think and Answer
The adjoining bar graph shows the number of houses (out of
100) in a town using different types of fuels for cooking.
Read the bar graph and answer the following questions:
1. Which fuel is used in the maximum number of houses?
2. Which fuel is used in the minimum number of houses?
3. How many houses are using coal as fuel?
4. Suppose that the total number of houses in the town is 1
lakh. From the above graph, estimate the number of houses
using electricity as fuel for cooking.
