              1. We know that the distance around the boundary of a plane shape is known as its perimeter,
and the region enclosed by a plane shape is known as its area.
Which term (perimeter or area) is suitable to determine the following?
                 (a) Length of wooden strip for photo frame. ....................
                 (b) Length of glitter tape around the margin of a chart. ....................

                 (c) Space on the floor for carpeting. ....................
                 (d) Wallpaper to cover the ceiling. ....................
                 (e) Length of rope for fencing a school garden. ....................
                  (f) Space on a wall for an advertisement. ....................

              2. Find the area and the perimeter of the given figures. Assume that each side of unit square of
the square grid to be 1 unit. Record the observations in the given table. Discuss your answer
                 in class.

            Perimeter

Shama, a student of class VI, has an assignment. She has to find the perimeters of some figures,
            given below.

                            7 cm 20 cm 2 cm 5 cm

                                      6 cm 30 cm 30 cm 4 cm
                       3 cm 1 cm

                                                                                           4 cm 5 cm
                            5 cm 40 cm 2 cm
                            (a) (b) (c)
Can you help her in finding the perimeters of the given figures?
We know that the lengths of the boundary of a figure is called its perimeter.
            Perimeter of figure (a) = 7 cm + 6 cm + 5 cm + 3 cm = 21 cm

            Perimeter of figure (b) = 20 cm + 30 cm + 40 cm + 30 cm = 120 cm
            Perimeter of figure (c) = 4 cm + 2 cm + 5 cm + 5 cm + 2 cm + 4 cm + 1 cm = 23 cm

From the above, we can conclude that the perimeter of a plane figure is the sum of the length of
            all its sides.

∴ The perimeter of a plane figure = Sum of length of all its sides
