Example 4: Find the cost of fencing a square park of side 250 m at the rate of `30 per metre.
Solution: Length of the side of the square park = 250 m

Perimeter of the square park = 4 × side
                                                                     = 4 × 250 m = 1,000 m
Since, the cost of fencing the square park is `30 per metre.
            Therefore, the total cost of fencing the park = `(1,000 × 30) = `30,000
Example 5: Pinky runs around a square park with a side of 65 m. Shikhu runs around a rectangular
park with a length of 40 m and a breadth of 65 m. Who covers less distance in one round?

                                                                     65 m

                                                       65 m 40 m
Solution: Perimeter of the square park of side 65 m = 4 × length of one side
                                                                     = 4 × 65 m = 260 m
Perimeter of the rectangular park = 2(length + breadth)

                                                                     = 2(40 m + 65 m) = 2 × 105 m = 210 m
Therefore, Pinky covers 260 m and Shikhu covers 210 m in one round.
            Clearly, Shikhu covers less distance.

                     Think and Answer

There is a rectangular race track in the school garden. The outer edge of the track has dimensions
80 m by 50 m, while its inner edge has dimensions 70 m by 40 m as shown in the figure.
                                                                  80 m
                                                                  70 m

Mukulika and Shreya start running along the
rectangular tracks as shown in the figure.
50 m 40 m Mukulika runs along the outer track and
completes 4 rounds. Shreya runs along the inner
                                                 track and completes 6 rounds.

                                                                  Starting point Starting point
                                                                    for Shreya for Mukulika
                 1. Who ran a longer distance – Mukulika or Shreya? And by how much?
                 2. Think and mark the positions as directed:
                   (a) Mark ‘P’ at the point where Mukulika will be after running a distance of 300 m.
                   (b) Mark ‘Q’ at the point where Shreya will be after running a distance of 500 m.
                    (c) Suppose both have run 1000 m. How many full rounds have they finished running around their tracks?
Mark ‘R’ for the position of Mukulika and ‘S’ for the position of Shreya.
