            Fractions

A fraction is a number which is used to represent a part of a whole or a collection.
                                                                                              a
A fraction consists of two numbers that are separated by a horizontal line, i.e., , where the number
                                                                                              b

‘a’ written above the line is called the numerator and the number ‘b’ written below the line is
            called the denominator.
                            2 Knowledge Desk
For example, is a fraction. Here, 2 is the numerator and
3 Fraction is called bhinna in
3 is the denominator. Sanskrit, which means ‘broken’.
It is also called bhaga or ansha
Fraction as a Part of a Whole meaning ‘part’ or ‘piece’.

Imagine a guava that is cut into some pieces of equal size. All of these pieces together make up
one whole guava, with each piece representing a fraction of the whole guava.

For example, suppose you want to share a guava equally with your friend, then you need to divide
it from the middle to create two equal parts. Each part is called a half of the whole and is written
                1
            as .
                2
                                                                                                Remember
                                                                                           When one whole is divided
                                                                                           into some equal parts,

1 then each part is called a
So, of the guava is a fraction of the whole guava. fractional part.
