Fraction as a Part of a Collection
Fraction represents a part of a collection as well.
Suppose we have a collection of 9 squares and we need to
2
shade of them.
3
2
To find of the collection of 9 squares, we first divide the 9
3
squares into 3 equal groups. Each group has 3 squares.
2
Now, to shade the of the given squares, we shade 2 out of
these 3 groups. 3
After counting, we find that there are 6 shaded squares,
2
which is equal to of the collection of 9 squares.
3
Here, numerator shows the number of parts and the denominator shows the total number of parts
of the collection.

1
Solution: To find of 15 pizzas, we divide this collection into 5 equal groups and take 1 group
out of it as a part. 5
Clearly, 1 group out of 5 equal groups contain 3 pizzas.
1
Therefore, of 15 pizzas = 3 pizzas.
