Horus Eye Fraction
Fraction is derived from the Latin word– fractus means broken or a part of a whole. The Egyptian had
the concept of fraction but their knowledge of fraction was limited to unit fraction, a fraction with
1 as numerator. Probably, the concept of unit fraction in Egypt was due to their believe in Horus, an
Egyptian God who fought the forces of darkness and won. In a battle, his eye were broken into pieces.
Since, only one of his eyes broke into fraction so Egyptian used unit fraction the most. The oldest math
book– Ahmes Papyrus talks about 6 types of Egyptian fractions. The Egyptian fraction is unique and has
a great application in mathematics.

Suppose you have 5 pizzas to be divided among 8 of your friends then by the process of Egyptian fraction

Any fractional number can be written as the sum of distinct unit fractions in multiple ways–
