Step 2: Place the point of the compass on the given point O and rotate the
compass to draw a complete arc of radius 2 cm with the centre at O.
This will trace a curve (circle) where every point is exactly at the same
                distance from O.

Thus we can say that a circle consists of a set of points on a plane that are 2 cm O
all at a fixed distance from a single point. This fixed distance is known as
the radius, and the fixed point is called the centre of the circle.

                                                                                                   Diameter
Note: If the diameter is given, then we can find the radius from the relation: Radius =
                                                                                                       2

Similarly, we will try and construct some other circular shapes with the help of a compass.
Example 1: Recreate the eyes given below with a ruler and a compass.

Solution: Here are the steps to draw symmetrical eyes using ruler and compass:

Step 1: Draw two equal length horizontal lines where we want to draw the eyes.

Step 2: Choose two points, A and B, on above and below the horizontal line and place the
compass on these points to draw the curves for the eye.

                                                           A

                                                           B
Step 3: Place the metal tip of the compass at point A and adjust it to draw the lower curve of
the eye. Next move the compass to point B and adjust it to draw the upper curve of the eye.
Ensure that this curve matches the lower curve in shape and size.

                                                            A

                                                            B
                          1. The curves should be symmetrical and identical on both sides. If the curves are not symmetrical,
Note: adjust the positions of points A and B, and then draw the curves again.
                          2. We will learn about the equidistant points later in this chapter.
