Learning by Doing
Objective: To create a pattern using circles with the help of a compass.
Materials required: Notebook, compass, pencil, eraser, coloured pencils
or markers (optional, for colouring)
Procedure:
• Using the compass, draw a circle with any desired radius on a notebook.
• Choose any point on the circle you just drew and mark it with a pencil.
• Place the metal tip of compass on the marked point and draw another circle with the
same radius as the first one. This new circle will cut the original circle at two points.
• Now take one of the points of intersection as the centre and draw a new circle with the
same radius. Repeat this step from the other point of intersection to draw another circle.
• Continue like this. What do you observe? We will notice that the circles intersect in various
ways to create a repeating pattern.
note: Keep the compass width consistent throughout the activity to maintain the same
radius for all the circles.
Similarly, we can create other patterns using a compass. Now, try to create any pattern with
the help of a ruler and a compass.
