            Application of Integers

Integers are very useful in our daily life. Here are a few areas where we use integers.
             (a) Banking and Accounting: Integers serve as utilities in banking transactions,
budgeting and accounting practices. In banking, to differentiate between
credit and debit, we consider the credit or deposit amounts by (+) or by positive
integers and the debit or withdrawal amounts by (–) or by negative integers. The
total of all your credits (positive integers) and debits (negative integers) is your
total bank account balance. Suppose you open your bank account with `1000
and deposit `5000 in your bank account after a week. Due to some unforeseen
                 work, you withdraw `3000. The new balance is `1000 + `5000 – `3000 = `3000.
             (b) Temperature reading: To represent temperatures, integers are used. The positive integers
show temperatures above zero degree celsius (°C), while the negative integers correspond to
                 temperatures which are below the zero degree celsius (°C). 70 80 90 100 °C

                                                      0
                                                              20
                                                                      40
                                                          10
                                                                              60
                                                                          50

                                                                                      80
                                                                          50
                                                                  30
                                                                                  70
                                                                      40
                                                                                          90
                                                          10
                                                              20
                                                                              60
                                           -30
                                               -20
                                                  -10
                                                                                              100
In India, there are many places where the temperature goes below 0°C. In Leh, the temperature
at night goes below 15°C to 25°C (represented as –15°C to –25°C) whereas in Rajasthan at
Jaisalmer, the temperature in summer is recorded above 50°C (represented as +50°C).
              (c) Sports: Integers are often used in sports and games to express scores,
points, rankings, and player statistics. Positive integers represent the
points gained by teams or players, which can be diminished by negative
integers, which represent penalties. Example: In golf, a score of 5 over
par can be represented by +5 and a score of 4 under par can be represented
                 by –4.
             (d) Altitude: We represent sea level with 0 and use positive and negative
integers to represent the height and depth of a place with respect the
sea level. Below sea level is represented with negative integers. The
submarine in the picture, for instance, is 86 m below sea level. This can
be represented numerically as –86 m. Mount Everest is 8,848 m above
sea level which can be represented by +8848 m.
Example 2: Write the opposite of the following with the appropriate signs:
                       (a) 1354 m above the sea level.
                        (b) A deposit of `20,000.

Solution: (a) ‘1354 m below the sea level’ is represented as –1354 m.
                        (b) ‘Withdrawal of `20,000’ is represented as –`20,000.

Teacher’s Discuss with the class that 0°C is the freezing point for the water. And the temperature below 0°C are
                Tip represented by negative integers.
