the left side at the same distance that is its counterpart negative integers. The image of +1 is at –1,
that is image of + 1 becomes –1, –2 becomes the image of 2 and so on.

While placing the mirror at 0, facing the negative integers then it is obvious that the positive
integers become images of the corresponding negative integers. Here 1 becomes the image of –1
and 2 becomes the image of –2 and so on.

So, the image of an integer on the number line is negative of that integer. Thus, the image of
negative integers on the number line is positive integers and vice versa.

            That is, image of –1 = − (−1) = 1, image of –2 = − (−2) = 2, image of –5 = − (−5) = 5.

Thus, we arrive at the conclusion that the negative of a negative integer is a positive integer.

Can you do this in some other way?

Digital or photo printed T-shirts are very popular among the youngster. In this method, the following
               process are used:
An image is first printed and then ironed on a T-shirt as shown here.

Designed on Computer Printed on Paper Ironed onto T-shirt
Here, observe that the right facing image is printed as left facing image on T-shirt.
Nishtha had printed the following design on a paper.

How will the design look like when printed on a T- shirt?

                  1. 2. 3. 4.

            Absolute Value of Integers

The numerical value of an integer, regardless of its sign, is known as the absolute value of the
            integer.
We use two vertical lines (| |) on either sides of the integer to show its absolute value. The symbol

            ‘| |’ is called modulus.
For example, the absolute value of 8 Note: 1. Absolute value is either zero or positive. It is never negative.

            is written as |8| = 8 and the absolute 2. |0| = 0; |–79| = 79 but –|79| = –79.
            value of –7 is |–7| = 7.
