More About Line Segments
We know that a line segment has two end points and a definite length. So, it can be compared and
measured. The distance between the two end points of a line segment is called its length, which
can be measured in millimetres (mm), centimetres (cm), metres (m), or any suitable unit of length.
Comparing Line Segments
When we are given two line segments, we find a relation between their lengths to compare them.
We use different methods to compare the given line segments.
Comparison by Observation
Sometimes, two line segments can be compared just by observing them.
Consider the line segments AB and CD shown here. By B C
looking at both line segments, we can say that AB is longer
than CD. A D
However, this kind of comparison is not always accurate. Sometimes the difference between the
lengths of two segments may be very small. Thus, we need a more accurate method to compare
line segments.
