            Angles

The word ‘angle’ comes from the Latin word ‘angulus’, meaning ‘corner’.
Look at the box. Here, AD is the edge of the box and AP is Q
the edge of the lid. If AD and AP are considered as rays, R

there is an inclination between the two rays AD and P

AP. This inclination between two rays at the common A D
starting point A (called the vertex) is known as the angle.
To denote the angle, a small curve is marked at the vertex. B

                                                                                                    C

The two rays AP and AD are called arms of the angle.
Let us see some real life examples of angles

            How to write an angle?

In specifying an angle, the vertex is always written as the middle letter.

Here, rays OP and OQ (which are arms of the angle) form an angle at vertex O. P
Angles are denoted by the symbol ∠. So, the angle POQ can be written as ∠POQ Arm
            or ∠QOP.
                                                                                                     O
Sometimes, angles are also named using a single letter or number, like ∠A, ∠B, Vertex Arm Q
∠1, ∠2, ∠3. Therefore, we can name ∠XYZ simply as ∠Y. But, it is insufficient
when two or more angles have the same vertex.
