                 Learning Objectives

After studying this chapter, students will be able to...
                                                                                                            Scan to learn
 identify the pattern in a number sequence, geometrical pattern formation and predict the next value
                     of a given pattern
 define the rules in a predictable sequence of items
 recognise, create, and extend both simple and complex patterns in different settings, including nature

Mr Solanki wrote a problem on the blackboard and challenged the students to solve it as soon as possible.
Rama within a minute, came out with the correct answer as discussed below.

                                                                  Find the sum of
                        Who can compute it 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + ... + 98 + 99 +100
                             quickly?

Sir, its total How could you find its
would be 5050 answer so quickly?

You can see the pattern as:
                                1 + 100 = 2 + 99 = 3 + 98
                                  = ... = 50 + 51 = 101
                                  There are 50 such pairs.
                                Hence, the sum = 101 × 50
                                         = 5050
