                         Practice Time 1A

                  1. Evaluate the following.
                    (a) – |17| (b) |11 + (–3)| (c) |(–11) – (–89)| (d) |18 – 118|
                  2. Arrange the following integers in ascending order.

                    (a) 3, –7, 11, 15, –13, –17 (b) –10, 12, –15, –9, –1, 0, 2
                  3. Arrange the following integers in descending order.
                    (a) –2, 10, –6, –15, –27, 51, –35 (b) –70, –84, –100, –59, –79

                  4. Verify a – (–b) = a + b for the following values of a and b.
                    (a) a = –5, b = 2 (b) a = –25, b = 35
                  5. Use the sign >, < or = in the box to make the statement true.
                    (a) –5 + (–8) + 15 13 – 16 + (–5)

                    (b) 12 – (–18) –50 12 + (–29) + 18
                    (c) –10 + (–6) + 12 –15 –11 + (–25)

                  6. (a) Write a pair of negative integers whose difference is 7.

                    (b) Write a negative integer and a positive integer whose sum is –9.
                    (c) Write a negative integer and a positive integer whose difference is –4.
                  7. Subtract the sum of –44 and 18 from –60.
                  8. The sum of two integers is –92. If one of the integers is 63, find the other.

                  9. Fill in the blanks to make the following statements true. Also, write the name of the property used.
                    (a) The sum of an integer and its additive inverse is .............................. .
                    (b) 18 + .......... = 0

                    (c) (–7) + (–4) = (–4) + ..........
                    (d) 13 + [(–28) + 12] = [13 + .......... ] + 12
                    (e) (–11) + .......... = (–11)
                 10. A fighter plane is flying at a height of 33500 ft above the sea level. At a particular point, it is exactly
above a submarine floating 13500 ft below the sea level. What is the vertical distance between them
                     at that time?
                 11. Rama deposits `1500 in her savings account and the next day, she again deposits `2,550. On the third
day, she withdraws `2600. Find the total amount in Rama’s savings account.
                 12. Five students participated in a maths test. The scores obtained by them are –10, 20, –5, –3 and 10.
What is the total score obtained by all of them in the test?

                Multiplication of Integers

Multiplication of Integers by Observing Pattern

We know that multiplication of whole numbers is repeated addition.
                For example, 2 × 4 = 4 + 4 = 8, 2 × (–4) = (–4) + (–4) = –8
