                  3. Verify the following equations by substituting the values of the variables given with simple
                     equations:

                    (a) 3a + 7 = 15; a = 2 (b) 11 – 3y = 17; y = –2 (c) x + 3 = 8; x = –5 (d) 7k + 1 = 22; k = 3
                                                                          5
                    (e) 3t + 2 = 11; t = –3 (f) 11 – 3x = –4; x = –5
                  4. Find the solution of the following simple equations by trial and error method:

                    (a) 5x + 2 = 17 (b) 3p – 11 = 4 (c) 2a −=

                                                                           3
                  5. Express the following cases into simple equations.
                    (a) The length of a rectangular plot is three times its breadth. If the perimeter of the plot is 150 m.
Express this in a simple equation.

                    (b) Aarav’s weight is 5 kg less than the weight of Pihu. The weight of Aarav is 12 kg. Express this in
                        a simple equation.
                    (c) Sum of two numbers is 32. The greater number is 13 more than the smaller number.

Jaipur is the capital and the largest city of the north-western state
                    of Rajasthan.
It is known as the ‘Pink City’ because of its many pink buildings, which
were painted to welcome guests in the past. Pihu’s family is travelling
from Jaipur to Udaipur by car.
The total distance from Jaipur to Udaipur is 398 km.
After travelling for 8 hours, Udaipur is still 32 km away.
Form an equation to find the speed of the car.

                Solving a Simple Equation

Pihu to Grandfather: Dada ji, could you please tell me? How old are you?
Grandfather: My age is 3 years more than the twice of your father’s
                age. Which is 73 years.

Pihu: How would I know my father’s age?
Grandfather: You can find your father’s age by solving the equation
that can be formed by the above statement.
Pihu: How do we solve an equation?

Grandfather: Solving an equation means finding the value of the
variable involved in the given equation or finding the solution of
                the equation.

There are many methods to solve an equation.
Let us discuss one by one.
