                                 Learning by Doing

Objective: Reinforce the concept of simple equation by forming the
equations using paper-cutting method and solve them.
Materials Required: Some squared shape cardboard sheets, some red
                and green colour bindis.
                Procedure:
                   • Work in pairs.
                   • Take some squared shape cardboard sheets, divide a few sheets into two equal triangles,
a few squared sheets into three equal rectangular strips and a few sheets into four equal
                   equal triangles.
                   • Consider a squared sheet is represented by x. So that,

                                   x
                                                           2 3 4

                   • Also, Take some red and green colour bindis. Each red colour bindi will represent positive
integer (+1) and each green colour bindi will represent negative integer (–1).

                   • Let us arrange them to make simple equations. As follows

                                                          + =

                                       + + =

                                                 – =

                   • Write the simple equations for each of the above arrangements and solve them.

                   • Also, using the above cardboard sheets make more equations and solve them.
