                The ratio of 8 months to 2 years is expressed as 8 months : 2 × 12 months = 8 : 24 = 1 : 3
                The ratio of 8 months to 2 years is expressed as 8 : 2 = 4 : 1

Example 3: Express the following statements as ratio:
( a) The cost of a chair is `480 and the cost of one table is `720.

( b) The distance between Delhi to Bharatpur is 220 km and the distance between Agra
                            to Jaipur is 300 km.
Solution: (a) The cost of a chair is `480 and the cost of one table is `720. The required ratio
                               480 2
                             = = = 2 : 3
                               720 3

( b) The distance between Delhi to Bharatpur is 220 km and the distance between Agra
                                                                       220km 11
                                                                                         :
                            to Jaipur is 300 km. The required ratio = = = 11 15
                                                                       300 km 15
Example 4: Sabia’s father earns `48000 per month. He spent `42000. Find the ratio of:
( a) his expenditure to salary.
( b) his savings to salary. Quick Check

( c) his expenditure to savings. In a box containing 90
Solution: Sabia’s father monthly income = `48000 apples, 7 were found rotten.
What is the ratio of good
His monthly expenditure = `42000 apples to all apples?
            Therefore, his monthly savings = `48000 – `42000 = `6000

                                                                        42000 7
              (a) Ratio between his expenditure and his salary = = = 7 : 8
                                                                        48000 8
                                                                   6000 1
              (b) Ratio between his savings and his salary = = = 1 : 8
                                                                   48000 8
                                                                         42000 7
                ( c) Ratio between his expenditure and his savings = = = 7 : 1
                                                                          6000 1
Example 5: The length and the breadth of a rectangular field are 45 m and 15 m respectively. Find
the ratio of the length to the breadth of the field.
Solution: Length of the rectangular field = 45 m

Breadth of the rectangular field = 15 m
                                                        45
The ratio of the length to the breadth = = 3 : 1
                                                        15
Thus, the required ratio is 3 : 1.
