                                 Learning by Doing

Objective: To reinforce the concept of fraction as an Operator ‘of’ by using square
                grid.
Materials Required: Square grid papers and coloured pencils or sketch pens
                Procedure:
                   • Make two 8 × 8 grids with 64 small squares.

                                          Grid-A Grid-B
                                1 1
                   • Colour red of the grid A vertically and other of the grid A blue.
                                2 2

Since, the total number of small squares in grid A = 64, therefore,

                     1 1
                     2 of 64 small squares 2 × 64 = 32 small squares

So, in grid A, 32 small squares need to be coloured red and 32 small squares in blue
                    as shown below.

                                                                              1
                                                 1
                   • Now, take grid B and colour of grid red and then next of grid blue. Repeat this pattern
                                                 4 4
on the other half of grid B as shown below.
                                1 1 1
                  Therefore, of grid B = of 64 small squares = × 64 = 16 small squares need to be
                                4 4 4
                   coloured red and then blue.
