Learning by Doing
Objective: To arrange the rational numbers in ascending order on the number line.
Materials Required: Chart paper and pen.
Procedure:
• Divide the students of the class into the group of five students.
• Draw a number line on the floor with the help of a marker. Write some rational numbers
on number chits, say
1 ,− 1 − 1 1 , 1 − 5
,
,
2 2 3 4 3
• Each student of the group chooses a number chit and will stand on the number line at
their respective number division part, as shown in the figure.
–2 –5 –1 –1 –1 0 1 1 1 1 2
3 2 3 2 4
• Take your positions from the smallest to the greatest.
• The ascending order of rational number is:
−5 <− 1 < −1 < 1 < 1 1
3 2 3 2 4
• You can make different number chits for different groups, and change the division on
number line accordingly.
• Now, ask each one to speak his/her name loudly in the order from the smallest to the
greatest numbers.
