Successive Discounts

After the original prices have been reduced by one discount, additional discounts may be offered
to take into consideration the competing markets, as well as for promotional purposes during the
off-season.
When two successive discounts are offered on the same item, the first discount rate is based on
the original price (MP) of the item, and the second discount rate is based on the price after the
first discount (i.e., on the first discounted price).
Similar procedures are used for more than two discounts. The discount rates are applied one by
one to the successive selling prices.

Example 15: Find the selling price of a shirt listed at `1500 and sell with two successive discounts
of 20% and 10%.
Solution: To find the selling price, we proceed as follows:

The original price of the shirt = `1500
20
First discount = 20% of `1500 = × `1500 = `300

So, the price after the first discount = `1500 – `300 = `1200

Rate of the second discount = 10%

So, the second discount = 10% of `1200 = × `1200 = `120
100
Therefore, the selling price after two successive discounts = `1200 – `120 = `1080

Thus, the selling price of the shirt is `1080.
Short-cut

In the case of successive discounts D % and D %, we can also find the selling price using the
