Solid Shapes
We know that the objects that have fixed shape and occupy some space are called solids. Cubes,
cuboids, cones, cylinders, spheres, and pyramids are examples of some basic solid shapes.
Cuboid Cylinder Cone Cube Pyramid
Here we shall study about a cube, cuboid and a cylinder in more details.
Cube: In a cubical box, all six faces are square Cuboid: In a cuboidal box, all six faces are
and identical. rectangular, and opposite faces are identical.
So, there are three pairs of identical faces.
Cubical Box Cuboidal Box
Cylinder: A cylinder has one curved surface and two circular faces which are identical.
Cylindrical Box
activity
Household items often come in the packing of
cuboidal, cubical, or cylindrical boxes. Collect
Curved surface such boxes. Now take one type of box at a
time. Cut out all the faces it has. Observe the
shape of each face and find the number of
faces of the box that are identical by placing
them on one another. Write down your
Circular base and observations and discuss with your classmates
top are identical
and the teacher.
Surface Area of Solid Shapes (Cuboid, cube, and cylinder)

Mr Arora is the owner of a shoe box manufacturing factory. From a shoe-manufacturing company
he got an order of 1000 shoe boxes.
He needs to get the required cardboard for making 1000 shoe boxes of a particular size.
If you own the factory instead of Mr Arora, what will be your first step in this regard?
First, we need to know how much cardboard is required to make 1 such shoe box.
For this, we need to use the concept of ‘surface area’.
