Solution: First, draw the perpendiculars from points A, B, C, and D on the coordinate axes, and

then write the order pairs (abscissa, ordinate) of each point as shown below.

                                                                 Y

Plotting of Points in a Cartesian Plane

To plot a point on a Cartesian plane, follow the given steps:

Step 1: Draw two perpendicular lines XX′ and YY′ which intersect each other at O on a graph paper.

Step 2: Choose an appropriate scale and mark the numbers on coordinate axes.

Step 3: Think about the coordinates of the given point and decide the quadrant in which it will lie.

            Step 4: In the ordered pair (a, b), ‘a’ represents the x-coordinate, and ‘b’ represents the y-coordinate.
So, move a units from zero along the x-axis, then move b units parallel to the y-axis and finally
            mark a point to plot (a, b). Y
                                                                                                             P (4, 3)
                                                                                          3
For example, let us plot a point P whose coordinates are
            (4, 3). 2 y-coordinate

                • Since the x-coordinate 4 is positive, move 4 units to the 1
                                                                                                   x-coordinate
                right of O.
                                                                               X –2 –1 O 1 2 3 4 X
                • As the y-coordinate 3 is also positive, move 3 units up (in –1

the direction of OY) and mark point P. It is the required –2

                point with coordinates (4, 3). Y
