Blood pressure is measured in two numbers:
Systolic pressure (the higher number), is the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats.
Diastolic pressure (the lower number), is the pressure when your heart is at rest between beats.
A line graph allows you to plot both systolic and diastolic pressure over time, showing the relationship between
readings and how they vary on different days, weeks, or months.
l Let’s say a patient checks his blood pressure in early morning for a week:
Day Systolic BP Diastolic BP Y Systolic BP Diastolic BP
(mm Hg) (mm Hg) 160
Monday 130 85
120
Tuesday 132 86
Wednesday 135 88 Measurement (in mm Hg) 80
Thursday 128 84 40
Friday 140 90
0 X
Saturday 138 89 Monday Tuesday Friday Sunday
Sunday 136 87 Wednesday Thursday Saturday
The line graph will show the patterns of his BP. For Days
example, you might notice that the systolic pressure
tends to be higher on Friday and Saturday, indicating a potential issue that could require medical attention or
lifestyle adjustments.
After prescribed a new medication to control high blood pressure, by monitoring BP readings before and after
starting the medication, you can visualize whether the medication is helping?
l Measure Blood pressure of your parents and grandparents and draw a line graph of the readings to monitor
blood pressure over time.
