Different Types of Commands in SQL Modern DBMS
Earlier, a paper-based system was used to store data. But this system had various drawbacks,
such as being prone to damage, editing problems, data repetition, and being difficult to manage.
Retrieving data from file-based systems was a very tedious and time-consuming task. To overcome
the problems in file-based systems, a computerised database system was introduced in the 1960s.
UNDERSTANDING DATABASE AND DBMS
A database is defined as an organised collection of data that can be visualised as a container of
information. With the help of a database, data can be stored, modified, and retrieved.
Database Management System
A Database Management System (DBMS) is a software package that controls the creation, maintenance,
and use of a database. It performs the tasks of maintaining databases so that the information is readily
available. It helps to manage the data of different fields like banks, offices, railways, airlines, etc.
Functions of database management systems:
Data Storage Management: A DBMS ensures efficient handling of data by creating structures
for complicated data and it facilitates ease in manipulation of data.
Security: DBMS ensures security by applying algorithms and rules onto the database that
controls access over it.
Backup and Recovery Management: This feature ensures data recovery in case of system
failure and provides safety to the data.
Data Presentation: DBMS controls data presentation format according to the requirement of
the situation.
Multi-User Access: Modern DBMS support multi-user access allowing multiple users to edit the
data without compromising data integrity.
