Riya Karumanchi
Riya Karumanchi, a Canadian
innovator, designed the SmartCane,
an enhanced white cane for the visually
impaired. The device is equipped with
ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles
from knee to head level, GPS for haptic
(vibration-based) navigation and provides
audio feedback. Karumanchi is also working
on future versions that will incorporate
computer vision technology for object and
face recognition. Her company received
initial funding from major investors, including
Microsoft and Arrow Electronics and has been supported by organisations like the
Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB).
