When you push down on one side, the other side goes up. A lever helps
you lift or move something heavy by using less force.
• Inclined Plane (Ramp): When you
want to push something heavy up,
like a box, it is easier to slide it up
a ramp instead of lifting it straight
up. The ramp (inclined plane) helps
reduce the effort.
Working Principle
Simple machines work by either
changing the direction of the push or pull (like with a pulley or lever) or
reducing the amount of push or pull needed to move something (like with
a ramp or screw). This way, you do not have to work as hard to move or
lift heavy objects.
Simple machines are all around us, and we use them every day. Here are
some examples:
• Scissors (Lever and Wedge): When you cut paper
with scissors, you are using a simple machine called
a lever. The blades are also wedging that help cut
through the paper.
• Wheelbarrow (Wheel and Axle): A
wheelbarrow has a wheel and an axle. The wheel
helps make it easier to carry heavy things, like
dirt or rocks, from one place to another.
• See-Saw (Lever): At the park, when
you play on a see-saw, you are using
a lever. When you push down on one
side, the other side goes up.
