that would normally require human intelligence. These tasks include things like
recognising images, understanding speech, and making decisions. AI works
by learning from data. For example, if you want an AI system to recognise
different hand gestures, you need to provide it with many examples of those
gestures. The AI then learns to spot patterns in the data to understand what
each gesture looks like.
Hand Gesture Recognition in AI
Hand gesture recognition means using a
camera or sensor to detect and understand
the movements of a hand. AI helps make this
possible by analysing the images or video of
hand movements and identifying specific
gestures. For example, an AI system might
be trained to recognise when someone raises
their hand, forms a peace sign, or makes a fist.
To achieve this, the system needs to learn from many images of hands in
different positions. Once it has learned, it can then identify these gestures in
real time. This is useful for many applications, like controlling robots, playing
games, or even turning lights on and off without touching a switch.
How Does AI Learn to Recognise Hand Gestures?
AI learns by being trained on data. In the case of hand gesture recognition, the
data would be images or videos of different hand gestures. The AI model looks
at these images and tries to understand what makes each gesture unique. It
then creates a pattern or rule for each gesture.
For example, if you train an AI to recognise a thumb-up, you would show it
many images of hands doing a thumb-up. The AI would learn to recognise
that a hand with a thumb pointing up is a “thumbs-up” gesture. Once the AI
understands this pattern, it can recognise the gesture in real time.

One of the tools that makes it easy to train AI models to recognise hand gestures
is Google’s Teachable Machine. Teachable Machine is an online tool that allows
anyone to train a machine learning model without any coding. It is designed
